Fleas can survive the winter on Mt Hood by finding shelter on warm-bodied animal hosts (pets and wildlife) or within heated indoor environments such as homes, cabins, or animal dens. 

While adult fleas, eggs, and larvae generally die outdoors when temperatures are consistently below freezing (32°F or 0°C) for several days, the climate on Mt Hood and in western Oregon can be mild enough in some areas or seasons that fleas can survive outdoors for a time. 

Key survival factors:

On Hosts: Adult fleas live and feed on warm-blooded hosts like dogs, cats, raccoons, and opossums, which keeps them warm regardless of the outdoor temperature.

Indoors: Heated homes and buildings provide an ideal, year-round environment (around 65-80°F) for all stages of the flea life cycle to thrive and reproduce.

Protected Outdoor Areas: Fleas can also survive in insulated outdoor spots like under porches, in crawl spaces, or in wildlife dens where they are protected from the most extreme cold.

Pupae Stage Resilience: Flea pupae (cocoons) are particularly resilient and can remain dormant for up to 30 weeks while waiting for the right conditions (warmth, humidity, host movement) to emerge, effectively "overwintering" until spring. 

Therefore, it is recommended to use year-round flea prevention for pets, even in cold climates like Mt Hood, to prevent an infestation from taking hold indoors.
